As we descended from the higher Andes, the landscape and ecosystems constantly changed. We first saw trees, then gradually more vegetation and many beautiful wildflowers. The views of green mountain valleys were superb. The people here, who have known no other place, don't fail to appreciate the beauty. Was this place once this person's favorite place?

The settlement at Kusyllunani was our camp for the second night. I think there could only have been perhaps three families here, far from any neighbors.

This is the settlement of Sandillani where a Japanese fellow has lived alone for twenty-some years, creating for himself here a beautiful garden. He occasionally greets a passing hiker.
